What a fixed-fee quote should include

  • All 4 quarterly updates and the final declaration (your tax return)
  • The MTD software licence – or whether you pay for it separately
  • Whether they do the bookkeeping or only check what you’ve recorded
  • A reminder before each deadline and an estimate of the tax to put aside
  • Whether VAT (20%) is added on top – not every practice charges it

Worth knowing

  • Accountancy fees for your business or lettings are an allowable expense, so they reduce your tax bill.
  • If your records are simple, doing it yourself can cost little or nothing – some HMRC-recognised software is free.
  • Ask for a fixed monthly or yearly fee, not an hourly rate, so the price can’t creep up.

What is Making Tax Digital for Income Tax?

An HMRC rule that requires sole traders and landlords above an income threshold to keep digital records with compatible software and send a summary of income and expenses every quarter, followed by a final declaration after the tax year ends.

How much does an accountant charge for MTD?

Roughly £30–£60 a month for a sole trader and £25–£50 for a landlord with 1–3 properties, if you keep your records in an app and the accountant sends the updates. See our price guide for other situations.

Does it cost me anything to use MTD Match?

No. Accountants pay us to be introduced to you. You only pay an accountant if you decide to hire one.

I'm under £30,000 – do I need to do anything?

Not yet, but the threshold is planned to fall to £20,000 from April 2028. You can still ask for quotes or join voluntarily.

I'm a landlord with a jointly owned property. How is income counted?

Usually only your share of the gross rent counts towards your qualifying income. An accountant can confirm your position.

Who are the accountants?

UK practices that hold professional body membership (e.g. ICAEW, ACCA, AAT, CIOT/ATT) and supervision for anti-money-laundering, and who are set up to file MTD quarterly updates for clients.

Don't leave your next quarterly update to the last minute.
